Weight Management Clinics

Pet obesity levels in the UK are at an all time high. It is estimated that 39% of cats and 59% of dogs are overweight or obese. Obesity can cause serious health problems for your pet such as heart and liver disease and diabetes. If ignored, obesity can reduce your pet’s length and quality of life.

At Oban Vets, Sarah our Vet Nurse runs a Weight Management Clinic, helping owners combat any weight issues with their pets. Our Weight Management Clinic offers routine weigh-ins, feeding plans and help with lifestyle choices to help your pet lead a healthy, happier life.

A healthy pet is not determined by a number on the scales. Like humans, no two pets are the same, that’s why we use a body conditioning score when assessing a pet’s weight. For healthy cats and dogs:

  • You should be able to see and feel the outline of your pet’s ribs without excess fat covering
  • You should be able to see and feel your pet’s waist and it should be clearly visible when viewed from above
  • Your pet’s belly should be tucked up when viewed from the side

If you have any concerns about your pet’s weight, contact the surgery to arrange an appointment.
